on the very long list of sounds that i love, i have just added water hitting skin. i realized this in the shower of course, since all of my best epiphanes take place in the shower (not where you thought i was going with that, was it?). it necessitated an extra 8 to 10 minutes of analysis and contemplation therein.
it really is one of my favorite sounds, and i have no reasonable explanation for it than the comfort i associate with it.
actually, it might be time for a list.
this is a (far from comprehensive) list of sounds that i love.
- the rain against my window. i just never understood the song where she says "i can't stand the rain against my window," as it is clearly one of the most soothing sounds out there. similarly, i love the sound of snow falling on the roof of my parents' house when i'm napping upstairs.
- someone breathing in bed next to me. let me clarify 2 things: 1. i don't like to be surprised by the sound of someone breathing next to me in bed. i like to go to sleep knowing that it will be there. 2. please note that i did not say "snoring."
- the ocean, but who doesn't love that sound? i especially love having deep, moving, life-altering conversations to the rhythm of a restless ocean. such conversations are always much more important.
- etta james in her wild youth. the gruffness of her voice in the song you can leave your hat on. it is not a voice you disobey.
- ivan's "mrph!" it's his "i want something that i can't get!" noise. it's small, insistent in a plaintive way, urgent, and all-around cute.
- irish clog dancing. it's so impressive, and mostly because i know i will never have the coordination to actually do it.
- the sound of biting into a really crisp apple, or crunchy carrots, especially, from inside my own head. that sound implies freshness, and i know that i'm doing something right for my body.
and it's excellent when you are having a snack in the middle of a quiet scene of a suspenseful movie, when everyone is listening intently. it's good for a laugh.
- 2nd gear. do you drive stick? then you know. 2nd gear is for power. 1st just gets you moving, and 3rd and up are for speed. 2nd gear is where the beast lives in my jeep.
- peep frogs! especially this time of year, when they could start any day, and i listen so hopefully at dusk anytime i am near a potential hatchery. forget the robin. peep frogs are the harbinger of spring.
- when you were a kid, did you ever dunk your head under water when you were swimming, and then splash your arms next to your ears and listen to the bubbles swarm around your face?
just me on that one? well. give it a try. it's a great sound.
- that opera song "the flower duet." i'm not a huge fan of opera, but i can recognize greatness when i hear it.
- campfire crackles. nothing sounds more like summer to me.
- a frozen lake stress cracking in the middle of the night. it sounds like this: BWOP! at least, to me it does. also, somehow, it is more of a feeling that goes through you than a sound in your ears. it will wake you up in the middle of the night, but leave you wondering what exactly it was that disturbed you.
- i miss the concorde. it shook the windows every morning at 9:05. now we occasionally have a very minor earthquake (because, believe it or not, richmond is on a fault line) and the windows will rattle for no reason, and i think it's the concorde. i'm always so disappointed when i remember it no longer flies.
- morning birds. when we were little, papa woke us up every weekend with the singing birds on the first 5 minutes of a public radio program called morning pro musica. it was a lovely start to the day, and far more pleasant than the polka music that generally followed if we didn't get up quickly enough.
- actual morning birds. the ones outside that always get louder as the days get warmer. also, whipoorwills, but they come out at dusk. and the ruffed grouse, but he sounds like a frustrated farmer trying to get his tractor to start. seriously, the ruffed grouse attracts a mate by beating his wings percussively and rhythmically against his chest. it sounds like a deisel engine far away that keeps turning over and never quite starts.
- hoofbeats on hard-packed earth. i just want to be wherever they are, and go wherever they are going.
ok that's enough for now. do you have a list?
